Screen production was severely affected at the outset of the pandemic – postponed releases and canceled productions. However, a modern problem requires a modern solution – the metaverse could be the hero of the industry’s recent dilemma.
The metaverse is an immersive environment where users can interact, play, work, and hang around each other using virtual and augmented realities.
In traditional production, the cast and crew must be in the exact location simultaneously. However, over the past two years, the events proved that the industry requires a way to shoot movies where the cast and crew are in different locations, or the production is partly or entirely in a virtual space.
Using the metaverse, the director could communicate with the actor through AR glasses, and the actor could put the glasses in between takes to make it seem like the director is in the same room.
In such a manner, the operation of the media room makes progress, making it a communications center with a range of cameras and displays. It is already set in motion and is something tech giants seek to generate further.
Microsoft’s Mesh for Teams is one existing example. It is where a mixed reality enables three-dimensional holographic interaction for meetings, collaborations, and business conferences.
It is possible for actors to film separately with various crews in front of a green screen and then put together the backgrounds. Actors could also wear AR glasses to see each other, then digitally pull them out as Justice League did with Henry Cavill’s mustache.
The production could also use two human stand-ins and then utilize illusion technology to alter their faces – it is helpful if the actors need to touch one another physically.
But the result largely depends on the actors; both the realism and the performance need graceful harmony, so actors need to learn another set of skills to make the scene seem real.
Modern technology does not entirely solve a dilemma, and old technology never truly dies, so a combination of both may be the perfect solution for this.
